On first listen, Sweet Chap’s third studio album Instead of Me sounds like a much more uplifting and upbeat affair to that of its predecessors. The quirky synth and guitar driven melodies conjure a sense of positivity throughout. And there are tracks that corroborate this feeling. Certificate 15 is an elated yet puzzled observation of his daughter’s journey through her teens. Parting Song explores the ambivalent emotions of saying goodbye to somebody. And It Matters To You is a loud, catchy, acoustic strummed jaunt with lyrics reminiscing old English tales.

But after a few listens a deeper and darker level of songwriting can be discerned- this is a thoughtful and personal album, attentive to subjects ranging from mortality, self esteem and relationships.

10 Years Ago is a song influenced by the sadness felt by SC on visiting his recently deceased grandfather’s house to discard his personal effects - objects that defined his grandfather throughout his life. This sense of a lifetime thrown away is the influence behind eponymous track Instead of Me, exploring the concept of existence. Damaging lethargy from feeling undervalued is the topic behind Your Way. And My Loss Too explores the loss of not feeling loss after the death of an estranged family member.

Sweet Chap cites influences from Pixies to The Pet Shop Boys, New Order to Elliot Smith and Depeche Mode to David Bowie.

Instead of Me is a further progression into the immersive sound of Sweet Chap - inventive and original post punk/alt rock electronica.
